Mettler Lake Project, Australia
A Model for Biodiverse Reforestation and Carbon Offsets.
The Mettler Lake project goes beyond carbon offsets—it stands as a pioneering model for biodiverse reforestation. This project not only reduces atmospheric CO₂ but also combats habitat loss due to agricultural expansion, promoting a nature-positive impact.
Located on ecologically valuable land near Lake Mettler Nature Reserve and close to Basil Road Nature Reserve, this project lies within Western Australia’s biologically rich coastal corridor, connecting 287 hectares of intact remnant vegetation with 85 hectares of newly planted native flora.
Through a mix of direct seeding and hand-planted seedlings, the project introduced 42 native plant species thoughtfully matched to soil conditions, reinforcing existing vegetation and creating essential corridors for local wildlife. This includes provisions for the endangered Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo, whose food sources were expanded by planting Proteaceous species.
Engaging with the Binalup Rangers Indigenous Group, the project also champions Indigenous knowledge in planting practices, reinforcing both ecological and cultural values.

The Mettler Lake Project, established in 2021 by Threshold Environmental for Native Carbon Pty Ltd, is a high-quality, biodiverse carbon planting initiative located along the South Coast of Western Australia. Situated within a rich coastal ecological corridor near Lake Mettler and Basil Road Nature Reserves, the project aims to enhance biodiversity and support carbon sequestration through native vegetation.
Spanning 85 hectares, the Mettler Lake plantings connect and expand upon 287 hectares of existing remnant vegetation. A total of 42 native flora species were carefully selected and planted, using both direct seeding and hand-planting techniques, to suit the local soil types and maximize long-term ecological resilience. These plantings provide essential corridors for wildlife, particularly benefiting the endangered Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo by expanding food sources through Proteaceous species.
The project also engages the local Binalup Rangers Indigenous Ranger Group in enhancing biodiversity outcomes, highlighting a strong commitment to Indigenous involvement in environmental conservation.

Carbon measurements and projections are independently verified by a qualified third party. This ensures that 1 carbon credit = 1 tonne carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e). A conservative estimate of carbon sequestration on the Mettler Lake Biodiverse Reforestation Carbon Offset (BRCO) planting site is approximately 330 tonnes of CO2-e per hectare over 50 years.
Carbon Neutral applies the Australian Government’s Full Carbon Accounting Model (FullCAM) to project the volume of carbon the planted trees and shrubs will sequester (over 50 years). FullCAM is based on a huge dataset and provides fully integrated projections of above and below ground sequestration for a carbon estimation area. This is in accordance with the Australian Government’s Clean Energy Regulator’s ‘Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings Method’.
This BRCO project is not registered under a formal certification framework.
CLAIMING CARBON NEUTRALITY
Carbon Neutral sells BRCOs before full sequestration is achieved. As it may be some years before carbon is sequestered, Carbon Neutral independently retires an equal number of verified carbon credits from an international project. This ensures that buyers can claim carbon offsetting (and carbon neutrality where applicable).
Reforestation activities require significant upfront investment to cover land acquisition and planting costs. By purchasing BRCOs you are helping to finance ongoing reforestation planting programs; buyers can proudly promote their support of an Australian ecosystem restoration project.
