Her appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Carbon Neutral as the profit-for-purpose company aims to expand from its established position as one of Australia’s leading organisations in nature-based reforestation and carbon sequestration.

Diana is excited to join a company that strongly aligns with her personal values, placing a substantial emphasis on addressing the urgent climate crisis and implementing tangible environmental solutions. She is keen to drive meaningful and measurable change in this critical area.

Prior to joining Carbon Neutral, Diana served as the Chief Financial Officer of Atlas Pearls Ltd, the world’s only publicly listed pearl company, for a period of five years. Her tenure at Atlas coincided with significant organisational challenges resulting from the COVID pandemic. In response to compromised traditional sales channels, she spearheaded an innovative approach to the company’s sales strategy. This involved implementing a multi-faceted digital auction platform, which resulted in immediate and direct growth for the company.

Diana began her career in the audit division of Ernst & Young, establishing a strong foundation for her later endeavours. She subsequently transitioned into various financial positions within ASX listed companies, working across the Resources, Oil & Gas, and Mining Services industries. Her international experience extends to collaborating with organisations in Australia, Indonesia, Nigeria, Mongolia, and Ghana, broadening her global perspective.

In addition to her corporate achievements, Diana is committed to enhancing the well-being of her community. This commitment is exemplified by her contribution as a Director and Treasurer for eight years at the Carers Association of Western Australia.

Diana holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Western Australia, complemented by her certification as a Certified Practicing Accountant.

Saturday, April 22nd marks one of the most prominent international days in the calendar, when people across the globe take actions to support Earth Day.

For Earth Day 2023, we need to act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably). Businesses, governments, and citizens — everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable. A partnership for the planet.

Earth Day was founded in 1970 by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson and has subsequently spread globally as a unique annual opportunity to promote environmentalism.

Nelson, a junior senator from Wisconsin, had been alarmed by the diminishing environment in the United States. His concerns were strengthened when in January of 1969, he witnessed the devastating effects of a vast oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Encouraged by the student anti-Vietnam war movement, Senator Nelson wanted to use the energy of student protests to add further momentum to the emerging public consciousness about global pollution. He announced the idea for a ‘teach-in’ on college campuses to the American media, and encouraged Pete McCloskey, a conservationist Republican Congressman, to work as his co-chair. Together they recruited Denis Hayes, a young campaigner, to organize events on campus and they choose April 22, a weekday falling between US Spring Break and final exams, to maximize the highest levels of participation. 

By 1990, Hayes had spread the word on a massive scale by organising events in over 140 nations.

Today in 2022, Earth Day is now a global phenomenon that is celebrated in more than 175 countries, with many of these now extending the event across seven days to be Earth Week.

This year the organising body are encouraging people act (boldly), innovate (broadly), and implement (equitably). The key takeaways from the broader piece revolved around the perceived failings of the existing Safeguard Mechanism, the veracity of offset purchasers and the acknowledgement that a number of large emitters are simply not doing enough to reduce their emissions. The ABC posited that a number of organisations are relying on, or intend to rely on, carbon offsets to justify their continued burning of fossil fuels.

Carbon Neutral firmly believe that a combination of approaches must be taken to mitigate the climate crisis and that is strongly reflected in our mantra – measure, reduce, offset. We are very deliberate in the order of those three simple words.

Through our Carbon Advisory Department, we assist organisations in measuring their emissions and the demand for carbon footprint assessments, lifecycle assessments and ESG reporting is growing. Over the past two decades we have observed this upward trend in demand, but more so, we recognise the shift in the reasoning for our partners to undertake the measurements.

In the formative years of our business, our partners often expressed their need to ‘be seen to be doing the right thing’, but more recently a change has occurred, and we now frequently hear ‘we must take action’. A subtle but significant change in rhetoric.

In our experience, this philosophy expands across the full gamut of our partners, from small businesses through to the larger organisations with higher emissions.

Once a business or organisation understands their impact, the next step on the journey is explore practical measures to reduce it. A high-quality reduction plan should always allow a business to make significant progress on minimising their greenhouse gas emission intensity, while enabling it to continue to grow and maintain profitability and progress. The final step in the process is then to offset any emissions that are deemed to be unavoidable.

Recent controversies around the validity of global verification bodies and the integrity of some carbon offset projects have created headlines across the world, and in some quarters, created fear and suspicion in the marketplace. However, we at Carbon Neutral feel protected through our unerring focus on a demand for integrity in all that we do – a point satisfyingly highlighted by the 7.30 Report.

In a perfect world, the ABC’s feature would have had the available airtime to expand upon the myriad of co-benefits that are created through carbon removal reforestation projects, such as the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor.

Although the climate crisis is inarguably one of the greatest challenges facing humankind and the environment, the impacts of biodiversity loss and the need for reforestation to conserve endangered species is of equal importance. The consensus of the scientific community is that these damaging effects will be irreversible even earlier than the much-cited 2030 goal for emissions reductions.

Projects like the internationally Gold Standard accredited Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor are a legitimate part of the solution to this problem, and investing in our annual Plant-A-Tree program is another valid way of making a tangible difference.

The conversation around carbon offsetting will continue and the demand for integrity will not abate, and that is something that we at Carbon Neutral wholeheartedly welcome.

Instances of businesses undertaking Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting have grown exponentially over the last five years, and the trend will undoubtably continue as we move through 2023. For medium to large organisations, the question is no longer should we begin the ESG journey, but rather when and how do we begin.

Closer to home in Australia, a study conducted last year by the WWF found that more than 80% of food packaging cannot be put into home recycling bins. WWF-Australia concluded this based on the recyclability of packaging in 82 popular food products. The study found that under 20% of products were entirely kerbside recyclable, around 55% must have certain components taken to a collection point, and around 25% are difficult to collect and recycle, with numerous examples of over-packaging and bad packaging design.

Most forms of food packaging use a lot of resources like water, chemicals, petroleum, minerals, wood and energy to produce. Their manufacture frequently generates high levels of greenhouse gas emissions and an abundance of wastewater containing toxic contaminants.

Pain in the glass
The manufacture of glass requires raw materials to be melted by the burning of fossil fuels, such as natural gas, fuel oils and liquefied petroleum gas. GHG emissions that result from the combustion of fuels include sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides. Emissions that result from the recrystallization of the materials then include fine particulates that can contain heavy metals such as lead and arsenic.

Heavy metal
In metallic packaging, the required aluminium is the result of bauxite that is smelted into alumina, an energy-intensive process that requires the use considerable volumes of water and eventuates in a noxious toxic sludge.

Paper weight
Paper packaging uses wood that is required to be milled into pulp using either mechanical or chemical processes. It also uses plant fibres like cotton, linen and hemp, as well as grasses like wheat and straw. The mills required for the process use significant amounts of energy and water, which in turn result in large volumes of toxic wastewater.

Plastic (not so) fantastic
The main raw materials for plastics production are natural gas or the refinement of crude oil. There are seven types of plastics polymers that account for over 70% of all global plastic production, including polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene, all of which are originat from fossil fuels.

Whether it is plastic in our oceans or GHG emissions related to manufacturing, the environmental impact of food packaging is immense.

Follow the data
If your business relies on the sale of packaged products, it is increasingly important to firstly understand the impact that your company is having on the planet, and the most effective method of gathering the data is a Lifecycle Assessment.

A Life Cycle Assessment analyses the environmental effects related to the whole lifespan of a piece of packaging. The main stages of an assessment cover raw material extraction, processing, manufacturing, distribution and ultimately disposal. The assessment also presents the other phases used to go to market, and it supports decision-makers in adding more sustainable considerations to their products and packaging.

A Lifecycle Assessment will measure the environmental performance of packaging and/or product design and create an accurate baseline to improve upon in future iterations. Accurate and reliable data is gathered on numerous environmental indicators, including resource consumption and the metrics of emissions.

LCAs are therefore an important tool in helping to discover problematic areas that a business needs to improve their environmental impacts. When an LCA is undertaken, a company is often compelled to revaluate all stages of their design development, from the selection of raw materials to the mining of these materials to the completion of the material’s life cycle.

Life cycle assessments help manufacturers to make vital decisions in packaging from the outset. For example, making packaging lighter can reduce freight costs significantly and an LCA can provide telling data on materials that can lead to positive savings for the business. The term carbon footprint is now well understood throughout the world. If you are reading this, it’s likely that you’ve landed on Carbon Neutral’s website with at least a basic understanding of the term, and the knowledge that carbon footprint assessments are a positive step towards doing your part for the planet.

This article aims to explain the backstory of how the term ‘carbon footprint’ came into the common vernacular, as well as explain what it means and exactly what is measured in an assessment.

A carbon footprint specifies the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by an individual, business, or other entity, (from buildings to whole continents). The factors measured to establish a footprint are commonly direct emissions from fossil-fuel combustion in manufacturing, transportation and heating, and the emissions related to the power required in the creation of goods and the facilitation of services.

However, carbon isn’t the only greenhouse gas that has been proven to contribute to climate change. Other greenhouse gases such as methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons are now commonly included in the measurement methodology of a carbon footprint assessment.

History
The concept of a carbon footprint evolved from the ecological footprint model, which was established by Canadian ecologist William Rees and Swiss-born regional planner Mathis Wackernagel at the University of British Columbia in the early 1990s. The term ecological footprint was coined to describe the total area of land necessary to sustain an activity or population. Initially, the factors used to measure an ecological footprint covered environmental influences such as water consumption and the amount of land used for food production.

Originally, Rees and Wackernagel described the concept as ‘appropriated carrying capacity’, but in an effort to popularise the idea, Rees then relabelled it as the catchier ‘ecological footprint’. Rees had been inspired by a computer technician who praised his PC’s “small footprint on the desk”. The term claimed greater global recognition in 1996, when Wackernagel and Rees published the book Our Ecological Footprint: Reducing Human Impact on the Earth.

The emphasis of an ecological footprint accounts for renewable resources. The quantity of resources which the planet produces is known as biocapacity. Like carbon footprint assessments, ecological footprints were calculated on a multitude of scales: for an activity, an individual, a city, a region, a country, or society as a whole. Founded in 2003, the Global Footprint Network determines the ecological footprint from United Nations data sources for the whole planet. Each year the calculations are updated with UN endorsed statistical data.

The modern Carbon Footprint Analysis
Today, several factors are used to determine an individual’s carbon footprint, in the most basic terms, these include:

• Household’s energy use and waste production.
  This covers how much electricity, gas and fuel people use and where they originate from, as well as whether the individual recycles waste or not.
  
• How individuals get from A to B
  How often people use public transport, walk or cycle can be a major factor in reducing one’s footprint.
  
• What we consume as individuals is the third major factor in determining a footprint.
  The food that we eat, and specifically the energy to produce it as well as the manufactured packaging used can be major contributors to a footprint. Beyond food, all of the other modern world consumables such as clothing, gadgets and toys have an impact on climate change and can be measured as such.

On a scale larger than that of an individual, businesses are increasingly working to minimise their carbon footprints.

Globally, the United States, China, and India are the top emitters of greenhouse gases. Commonly, developed nations have higher carbon footprints. This is principally due to their larger energy industries, which use significantly greater amounts of fossil fuels to generate electricity, and a higher percentage of residents who own cars. Closer to home, Australia sits in a disappointing tenth place on the list of countries with the highest CO2 emissions per capita, with a record worse than any of the nations listed as top emitters.

Once a carbon footprint is measured, then we must reduce it
Yearly rises in greenhouse gas emissions are an acute issue in the modern world. The situation demands urgent action today. Carbon footprint reduction, when done properly, will alter people’s lives and, in the extreme, save millions of lives and reduce the mass extinction of flora and fauna throughout the planet. You can help the environment by reducing your carbon footprint in a range of different ways. Modest changes can all add up, whether it is in your home, workplace, school, or the way in which you chose to travel. Every individual should look at ways to reduce their own carbon footprint by lowering the amount of energy that they consume, eating fewer animal-based products, buying consumables produced locally, using more environmentally friendly methods of transport, and overall reducing their waste.

Decreasing your carbon footprint can also help you live a healthier and more cost-effective life as well. Whether it’s better-quality air, a healthier diet, or lower energy costs, reducing your footprint means you’re contributing to the fight against the global climate crisis.

The Quiet Shift Reshaping How Australia Protects Nature

Five minutes on the internet will reveal a myriad of auditing bodies and organisations who claim to validate projects, and most act with integrity and legitimacy. But all are slightly different to each other, and the world has been crying out for a single system to validate projects that claim to improve the world across a range of factors.

The most widely known of these methods of measuring the righteousness of projects is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, or UN SDGs.

In the early years of the 2000s the UN Member States issued a series of goals known as the Millennium Development Goals. These MDGs were made up of eight goals, that included education, the environment, equality, health, hunger and poverty. Then in 2015, the UN replaced these with a set of more ambitious objectives known as the Sustainable Development Goals. The SDGs were seen as the scheme to create a sustainable, positive, and fair future for all.

The 17 SDGs are as follows:

The SDGs are designed to provide a holistic view of what needs to change in the world for the better. Some apply to communities, some countries as a whole and some apply to ensuring a good quality of life for flora and fauna. The ultimate aim is to create peace and prosperity for all global citizens and a more sustainable environment.

The United Nations set a target date for their Member States to reach the terms set out in this programme by the year 2030. To achieve this, each state must work together to make real and tangible changes in their own region.

While the SDGs may seem ambitious, it’s important to reduce them into steps that businesses, organisations and individuals can take to help make them a reality. The UN Sustainable Development Goals are a long-term commitment, not a quick fix. Each individual goal was created to enable a lasting change that future generations and the planet itself could benefit from.

Here at Carbon Neutral, we are well versed in the meaning and definitions of these goals. For example, our keynote reforestation project, the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor has been assessed by independent experts to encompass seven of the goals; Climate Action, Life on Land, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Clean Water and Sanitation, Good Health and Wellbeing, Quality Education, Partnerships for the Goals.

In our capacity as a provider of international credits that are created further afield, we are proud to also offer credits for a project in the Central Kalimantan region of Borneo that proudly adheres to all 17 of the UN’s SDGs.

The Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve Project aims to protect tropical forests by safeguarding over 65,000 hectares of tropical peat forest. The area is home to many endangered species, including the orangutan, and has earned many of its sustainable development goals by creating sustainable social and health benefits for the local community.

The expansion of the palm oil industry has placed biodiverse ecosystems like Rimba Raya under immense threat of destruction due to economic pressures.

The reserve in which the project sits, provides safe refuge to 122 species of mammals and 300 species of birds. Its native Borneo Orangutan is one of only three remaining species of great apes that once inhabited tropical forests in Thailand, Southern China, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Today, they are found only in a few fragmented forests on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo.

Another of the core reason that Rimba Raya qualifies for each of the UN SDGs lies in its focus on the welfare of women and children living around the margins of the region. Rimba Raya’s REDD+ program has worked to support alternative revenue streams for the forest dependent community. The project’s mission is to prevent the community from working in industries that are linked to deforestation. The scheme has also provided essential items such as cookstoves and water filters, as well as funding initiatives to provide subsidized healthcare to the local population.

When considering all of the benefits that the Rimba Raya project offers, it’s very easy to see why it richly deserves the plaudits that it receives for being credited with all 17 of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

After negotiations that ran late into Tuesday night, the EU imposed a carbon dioxide emissions tariff on imports of polluting commodities such as cement and steel, a scheme that aims to strengthen European industries as they continue on the pathway of decarbonisation.

Negotiators achieved consensus at around 5am in Brussels, on the law to impose CO2 emissions costs on imports of cement, fertilisers, aluminium, electricity, iron, and steel.

Businesses that import those goods into Europe will now be required to purchase certificates to cover their CO2 emissions. The scheme is designed to apply the same CO2 costs to non-European companies and domestic EU industries, with EU member nations already obliged to acquire permits from the EU carbon market when they are responsible for pollution.

The new law, known as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (or CBAM), is being cited as a crucial pillar of European climate policies. It stands as one of the only mechanisms to incentivise the EU’s trading partners to decarbonise their manufacturing industries.

The over-riding objective of the levy is to put a stop to European industries being undercut by lower cost commodities produced in regions with inadequate rules around pollution and the environment. Further details on the new law will be determined later this week in ongoing negotiations that will further reform Europe’s carbon market. The move by the EU has been criticised by a number of other nations including China.

AiGroup, a body seen as a powerful ally for Australia’s business sector, has stated that the Australian Government must establish a similar mechanism to safeguard international competitiveness the country’s largest emitters. AiGroup went on to recognise that the establishment of an Australian CBAM would be ‘‘a big exercise’’, however it would be necessary to position Australia in comparable advantage as other major economic blocks, including the EU.

Addendum (19/12/2022):
Since the publication of this article, the agreement has further developed with the extension on emissions trading to include heating, road transportation and shipping.

Representatives of the 27 EU member states and the European Parliament have now fast-tracked the pace at which businesses, from energy providers to steel manufacturers, are obliged to reduce their pollution.

The deal that protects European Union-based producers from low-cost overseas competitors complements the measures agreed upon last week. Policymakers have also set out the timeline for phasing in the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism from 2026.

When we use the term biodiversity, we don’t just mean birds, plants, and animals – biodiversity is defined as the relationship between each of these to create a productive and healthy ecosystem for the planet as a whole.

Here at Carbon Neutral we are incredibly proud to operate the Yarra Yarra Biodiversity Corridor which we proudly promote as Australia’s largest biodiversity, reforestation, carbon sink. It is true to say that some of the country’s large emitter organisations operate larger-scale projects, however none of these can lay claim to being truly biodiverse, as it is often the case that plantings are what are known as mono-culture. Mono-culture is a term for the planting of single or limited types of species of trees and shrubs, which are ultimately less beneficial to the flora and fauna in that region.

A global biodiversity hotspot

The southwest of Western Australia is one of only 35 biodiversity hotspots across the globe. Biodiversity “hotspots” are the richest and most threatened habitats of plants and animal species on the planet. This means that we have a remarkable diversity of species, but they are under threat, which makes our collective conservation efforts even more important.

The World Conservation Monitoring Centre of the UN’s Environment Program recognises a total of 17 country’s that can be described as ‘megadiverse’; these being Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, Ecuador, the United States, Philippines, India, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa and Venezuela. As Australia is one of the richest and most developed nations on this list, it is essential that our government and citizens conserve our native species and maintain and enrich biodiversity wherever possible.

The biodiversity in Australia, and in particular in its southwest corner, is a result of an ancient landscape with centuries of a consistently balanced climate. This part of the continent hasn’t seen ice glaciers for over 200 million years, and this has resulted in the evolution of a myriad of species to evolve unencumbered by the major extinction events witnessed elsewhere on the planet. In short, West Australia’s flora and fauna has been able to independently evolve unlike anywhere else in the world.

This part of Western Australia is comparable in size to England; however England has a mere 1,500 species of vascular plants (all plants except ferns and mosses), with 47 of them found unique to the country.  By comparison, southwest Australia is home to over 7,200 such species, over half of which are found nowhere else in the world.

70% of Australia’s 207 mammal species live in Western Australia, with 25 of these found nowhere else on the planet. As well as our furry friends, over 500 species of reptile, 1,600 types of fish, approximately 13,000 species of plants as well as hundreds of thousands of invertebrates have been identified in W.A.

Why is biodiversity vitally important?

People rely upon biodiversity for food and their physical and mental health. It is imperative in the cultivation of the food we eat, is required to produce countless medicines, and is needed as the raw materials in the production of many essential industrial commodities. Biodiversity is also the basis for Australia’s tourism sector and provides us with clean drinking water.

By definition, biodiversity comprises every living thing and the environment in which they live. From single cell organisms to you and I and everything in between. Biodiversity is the raw material used in the web of life on the planet Earth.

At Carbon Neutral, our projects create habitats for these native animals and help protect the biodiversity within the region. Many of the threatened and endangered species like Malleefowl, Carnaby’s Black Cockatoo, and the Western Spiny-tailed Skink rely on projects like ours to avoid extinction.

Our work creates green corridors that connect crucial habitats. Our restoration design helps link together existing bush with our new plantings and nature reserves.

Furthermore, over 90% of the original vegetation in our project area has been historically cleared. It is our mission to restore these ecosystems and allow them to prosper as they did prior to human intervention over the past century.
