landowners working with carbon neutral

Carbon Neutral works with landowners in Western Australia, South Australia and Victoria to revegetate land for rehabilitation and carbon sequestration.

Planting native trees and shrubs can have significant benefits to the local environment improving the productivity and value of the land while helping address issues such as salinity, erosion, habitat and biodiversity loss.

Trees and shrubs also play a major role in helping address the build up of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere contributing to climate change. As plants grow they suck in carbon dioxide, a key greenhouse gas, from the atmosphere and release oxygen back out.

By partnering with Carbon Neutral, landowners can benefit from the planting of native trees and shrubs on their land whilst being paid to care-take the trees and shrubs in their vulnerable early years.

will my land be suitable?

Most land cleared before 1990, in the 350 – 1000 mm rainfall areas of WA, SA and VIC and around 10HA or larger will be considered (smaller sites may be considered if they have high carbon sequestration potential). Factors such as the size of the site and encumbrances on the property will be determined.

Carbon Neutral representatives conduct a site assessment to determine that the soil profile is of adequate depth, without a saline water table and cleared before 1990. Planting sites are chosen principally for their ability to sequester carbon dioxide while improving and protecting the rural environment.

what does carbon neutral offer landowners?

Carbon Neutral will pay landowners (if estimated carbon sequestration potential is above a minimum level) an annuity based on the estimated amount of carbon to be stored in the carbon sink per hectare. The landowner’s annuity is paid from Years 3 – 10 after planting, given satisfactory tree survival at year 2 and 5.

Carbon Neutral also pays the full cost of planting and establishment plus:
• Site planning in conjunction with the landowner, which may include addressing salinity or erosion
• Seedlings (including transport)
• Monitoring the health of the plantings
• Infill plantings (at CN’s discretion if survival is below 80% within the first 2 years)
• Suitably experienced landowners or contractors are employed to prepare the site and plant

In return, Carbon Neutral will register a carbon right and carbon covenant over the planted area for a period of 100 years to ensure the permanence and protection of the carbon sink. Carbon Neutral simply owns the carbon in the trees, while the landowner owns the trees and shrubs and any other products or benefits derived from them. Carbon Neutral emphasizes that landowners still own the land.
